Depression in Bay of Bengal may become severe cyclonic storm

The weather system is expected to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Narsapur on November 3.

A depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm and hit the Andhra Pradesh coast on the morning of November 3, according to the Deccan Herald.

The system is forecast to cross the coastline between Nellore and Narsapur, bringing wind speeds of 100-110 kmph with gusts reaching 120 kmph.

Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said the wind speeds could be between 80 kmph and 90 kmph with occasional gusts up to 100 kmph.

The weather agency noted that the system moved west-northwestwards and was expected to become a deep depression by Saturday midnight and a cyclonic storm by November 1.

This development follows the impact of cyclonic storm Arnab, which hit Andhra Pradesh and Odisha on October 28.

Manorama Mohanty, director of the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, said the department is closely monitoring the system's progress.
