Gang robs women of gold ornaments on train in Maharashtra

A group of men allegedly tampered with railway signals to stop the Mahalaxmi Express near Salpa station on Sunday.

A group of eight to 10 men allegedly stopped the Mumbai-Kolhapur Mahalaxmi Express by tampering with the railway signalling system in Maharashtra’s Satara district on Sunday, according to the Hindustan Times.

The robbery occurred near Salpa railway station around 2.30am when the suspects entered the S-2 coach and snatched gold ornaments worth approximately ₹2 lakh from three women passengers.

Miraj Railway Police Station reported that the gang also allegedly threw stones at coaches S-2, S-3, and S-4 to prevent pursuit, causing panic among those on board.

Police inspector Sitaram Phand of the Miraj Railway Police Station said that a search operation is currently underway to find the accused, noting that they appear to have targeted women passengers.

Investigators believe the group split into different teams, with some members staying near the signals while others boarded the train to commit the theft.

A case has been registered at the Miraj Railway Police Station, and police are continuing their investigation into the incident.
