Supreme Court allows green crackers in Delhi-NCR for two days

The court set specific time slots for bursting green firecrackers before a complete ban returns on November 9.

The Supreme Court has permitted the bursting of green firecrackers in the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) for a limited period around Diwali. According to reports from The Tribune and Deccan Herald, the court allowed the use of these crackers on November 7 and 8, with a complete ban set to return on November 9, 2026.

A bench of Justices M M Sundresh and Prasanna B Varale directed that firecrackers cannot be burst near any notified silence zones or within 300 metres of old-age homes, hospitals, nursing homes, primary and district health centres, or educational institutions. These locations are to be designated as 'No-Cracker Zones'.

The court specified that only green crackers approved by CSIR-NEERI may be manufactured, sold, or used. Manufacturers with valid certification from CSIR-NEERI and PESO are permitted to produce only those products uploaded to the CSIR-NEERI website between November 2 and November 6, 2026. The court also banned the sale of crackers joined in series, such as garlands or 'ladis', and prohibited any products containing Barium.

According to the Deccan Herald, the court ordered that online sales are banned and crackers must be sold at locations designated by District Collectors or Commissioners. Each box must feature a specific QR code containing manufacturer and licence details. Authorities have been asked to check vehicles entering the region to prevent the entry of illegal or conventional firecrackers.
