Groundwater levels in Ranga Reddy district fall to 12.75 m bgl

The average depth to groundwater in the district increased by 6.61 metres in one year, according to a Groundwater Department report.

Average groundwater levels in Ranga Reddy district fell to 12.75 metres below ground level (m bgl) in October 2026, according to a report by Telangana Today. This is a significant drop from the 6.14 m bgl recorded during the same period in 2025.

The Groundwater Department (GWD) analysed 84 observation wells, finding that water levels rose in only two wells while falling in 79. All 27 mandals in the district recorded lower groundwater levels compared to the previous year.

A senior GWD official stated that the underground aquifers failed to recover following a weak monsoon. The official also cited unsustainable domestic use and a surge in deep-bore drilling as factors contributing to the crisis.

Rainfall patterns contributed to the decline, as 19 of the 27 mandals recorded rainfall deficits. Only Shabad recorded excess rainfall at 6.5 per cent, while seven mandals received normal rainfall.

The highest rainfall deficits were noted in Abdullapurmet at 47.9 per cent, Yacharam at 46.3 per cent, Ibrahimpatnam at 44.6 per cent, Saroornagar at 42.5 per cent, and Manchal at 41.9 per cent.

An official warned that thousands of domestic borewells are projected to dry up completely. A city-based environmentalist noted that without aggressive government measures, taps could run dry by March.
