Punjab cabinet approves 300-tonne wet waste-to-gas plant in Mohali

Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited subsidiary will establish the compressed biogas facility at Samgauli village to process waste from nine urban local bodies.

The Punjab cabinet has approved awarding a compressed biogas (CBG) project for the Mohali cluster to HPCL Renewable and Green Energy Limited (HPRGE), according to the Hindustan Times. The facility, a subsidiary of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited, will be set up at Samgauli village in Dera Bassi.

The plant is designed to process approximately 300 tonnes of segregated wet waste every day to create organic manure and cleaner fuel. It will also take in 15 to 20 tonnes of cattle dung daily from various sources.

The project will serve nine urban local bodies, including Mohali, Zirakpur, Kharar, Nayagaon, Dera Bassi, Kurali, Lalru, Banur, and Gharuan. The Mohali municipal corporation (MC) will serve as a stakeholder, while HPRGE handles the establishment of the plant.

The Mohali MC had previously proposed providing 15 to 20 acres from its 39-acre land parcel at Samgauli for the project. HPRGE has requested assistance from the civic body and the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) regarding land, road connectivity, and statutory clearances.

The project has been pending for more than 10 years following previous unsuccessful attempts to find bidders. The MC House had cleared the land allotment to HPRGE in August.

The Mohali MC has set aside ₹6 crore for a solid waste processing plant at Samgauli as part of a ₹21-crore waste management plan. These funds will be used for constructing boundary walls and sheds for processing and segregation.
