Indian Coast Guard rescues injured fisherman off Mangaluru coast

The rescue operation was conducted at midnight after a distress call was received from the fishing boat Shiv Sagar.

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) evacuated an injured fisherman during a midnight operation approximately 54 nautical miles (100 km) off the Mangaluru coast on Sunday, November 1, according to reports by Telangana Today, Deccan Herald and The Hindu.

The Coast Guard District Headquarters No. 3 (CGDHQ-3) received a distress call over Very High Frequency (VHF) radio from the Indian Fishing Boat (IFB) Shiv Sagar. The vessel had sailed from the Mangaluru fisheries harbour three days ago for deep sea fishing.

The fisherman, identified as Komara Ramu, fell into the water while hauling fishing nets. Although crew members pulled him back aboard the vessel, he was disoriented and required urgent medical intervention.

CGDHQ-3 deployed the interceptor vessel ICGS C-448 to the location. Despite adverse nighttime conditions, the vessel located the Shiv Sagar, evacuated the fisherman, and provided immediate first aid.

The patient was brought to the New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) jetty and subsequently transferred to a local hospital for further medical treatment.
