Madhya Pradesh police inspector killed by truck in Dewas district
Khategaon station incharge Dilip Puri was allegedly run over by a vehicle transporting illegal liquor on the Indore-Betul highway.
A Madhya Pradesh police inspector was killed in the early hours of Monday in Dewas district after a truck carrying illicit liquor allegedly ran over him, according to The Hindu. Khategaon police station incharge Dilip Puri was leading a team to intercept illegal liquor transportation on the Indore-Betul highway when the incident occurred.
Excise department sub-inspector Pooja Gehlot stated that the truck, which was travelling from Harda towards Khategaon, had been parked near a roadside eatery since Sunday night. When Mr Puri attempted to question the driver, the individual allegedly drove over a divider to flee, causing the vehicle's rear wheel to strike the officer. Mr Puri was taken to a hospital but could not be saved.
Dewas Superintendent of Police Aditya Mishra said police seized the vehicle and more than 1,800 litres of liquor found in a secret compartment without valid permits. The driver and staff fled the scene after abandoning the truck, and a search is currently underway. A special investigation team (SIT) has been formed and an FIR has been lodged.
The incident follows the recent death of 13 people in the district allegedly due to spurious liquor. Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar criticised the state government on X, questioning the administration's ability to control the liquor mafia. The government has already transferred the district Collector and the SP amid the ongoing controversy.
