Nine killed as Learjet 60 crashes into Florida neighbourhood

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis described the jet's impact as looking like a missile going down after the plane exploded near Mar-a-Lago.

Nine people died on Sunday when a Learjet 60 business jet crashed into a neighbourhood in southern Florida, according to the Hindustan Times.

The aircraft departed from Austin, Texas, and was heading for the Bahamas before it crashed near Cresthaven in Palm Beach County, US transportation secretary Sean Duffy said.

The crash site was less than seven miles from the Mar-a-Lago resort. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis described the incident at a press conference near Lake Worth Beach, stating it looked like a missile coming down with a massive explosion.

Palm Beach County commissioner Joel Flores said the crash left a massive crater near a mobile home park entrance. Approximately 600 people were evacuated to two shelters in the county.

An audio recording from a Miami air traffic control centre captured the final moments, including a pilot reporting they were managing ice and turbulence before declaring a mayday. The recording shows the descent rate increasing to 22,000 feet per minute before the final communication.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the crash. The cause of the accident and the identities of the nine victims have not been released.
