Maharashtra: PEDC plans loan scheme for Hindu priests

The Parshuram Economic Development Corporation is preparing a project report to provide financial support to members of the priestly community.

The Parshuram Economic Development Corporation (PEDC) is planning a dedicated loan scheme to provide financial support to Hindu priest communities across Maharashtra, according to The Times of India.

PEDC Chairperson Ashish Damle said on Sunday that a detailed project report for the scheme is being prepared for submission to the state government for approval.

Damle stated that the initiative aims to strengthen the economic position of priests and those dependent on traditional religious services, noting that many in the community lead underprivileged lives.

The PEDC was created by the Maharashtra government in September 2024 to provide welfare measures and institutional support for economically weaker sections within the Brahmin community.

During a recent board meeting attended by the chief secretary and additional chief secretary (planning), the board approved an administrative overhaul to expand the corporation's reach.

The board decided to set up separate cells at each divisional level through the planning department and will use employees from the Annasaheb Patil Economic Development Corporation for operations until the new setup is ready.
