Iran labels US the primary threat to nuclear non-proliferation regime

Foreign ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei stated that American threats against Iranian nuclear facilities could encourage nations to violate international treaties.

Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said on Monday that the United States represents the most significant danger to the global nuclear non-proliferation regime. According to the Times of India, Baghaei made these comments during a press briefing in response to US threats directed at Iran's remaining nuclear sites.

Baghaei argued that issuing military threats against a nation undermines the principles of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). He claimed that such rhetoric serves as an incentive for states to violate the treaty and reconsider their security policies.

The spokesperson criticised the silence of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the United Nations, and the UN Security Council regarding Washington's hostile language. He stated that these threats would increase Iran's determination to bolster its own defence capabilities.

Addressing whether Tehran might change its nuclear doctrine, Baghaei said discussions were occurring within Iranian society and political circles. He linked these debates to years of American pressure and the targeted assassinations of individuals linked to the nuclear programme.

Baghaei maintained that Iran's nuclear programme is peaceful and confirmed that the country has no immediate plans to exit the NPT. He said that as long as Iran remains a member, it considers itself bound to comply with the treaty's obligations.
