AJUP chairman Humayun Kabir threatens NH 34 blockade on December 6

The Nowda MLA plans to block the highway in West Bengal to protest the scheduled construction of a mosque in Murshidabad.

Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) chairman and Nowda MLA Humayun Kabir has threatened to block National Highway 34 on December 6, according to The Hawk. The blockade is planned for the day construction is set to begin on a proposed mosque in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district.

Addressing a meeting at the Bari Masjid premises in Beldanga on Monday, Kabir challenged the administration to stop the protest. He stated that the highway, which spans approximately 30 km between Rejinagar and Berhampore, would remain under his control on that date.

Kabir claimed his supporters would occupy roads in several areas, including routes from Krishnanagar, Domkal, Jalangi, Sainthia, Kandi, Burdwan, and the Nabadwip Bridge to Berhampore. He maintained that his followers would not violate law and order and requested people to stand with him on December 6, 2026.

The proposed two-storey mosque in Beldanga is estimated to cost Rs 87 crore. It is intended to accommodate 80,000 people for prayers, with an additional facility for 20,000 people, alongside basement rooms for paying visitors.

The former Trinamool Congress leader, who was expelled from the party last year, announced the mosque construction to coincide with the anniversary of the 1992 Babri Masjid demolition. Local authorities are currently making arrangements to maintain public order in the region.
