Clean Ganga only possible with clean Yamuna, says Delhi LG

Lieutenant Governor TS Sandhu noted that the Yamuna basin accounts for about 40 per cent of the Ganga basin.

Delhi Lieutenant Governor TS Sandhu said on Sunday that achieving a clean Ganga is only possible if the Yamuna is also clean. According to the Hindustan Times, Sandhu made these remarks while addressing students at a Delhi school during its annual day function.

The event was themed “Ganga – Ek Aviral Dhara.” Sandhu stated that the Yamuna basin makes up about 40 per cent of the Ganga basin and meets the Ganga at the Sangam in Prayagraj.

The Lieutenant Governor noted that the 22-km stretch of the Yamuna in Delhi accounts for about 76 per cent of its pollution, despite being less than 2 per cent of its total length. He said an Aviral and Nirmal Ganga is only possible with an Aviral and Nirmal Yamuna.

Sandhu asked students to avoid throwing plastic or puja material into the river and to encourage their families and friends to do the same. He added that a cleaner Yamuna in Delhi means a cleaner Ganga for the whole nation.

The Lieutenant Governor also congratulated the school on completing 77 years since its establishment in 1949. He commended the teachers and staff of the DPS Society flagship school for their contribution to education.
