Tiger cub from Umred-Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary sighted in Pench Tiger Reserve

The sighting of the cub near Chorbahuli Gate suggests natural tiger dispersal and potential wildlife corridor connectivity in Maharashtra.

A tiger cub born to a tigress from the Umred-Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary was sighted near the Chorbahuli Gate of Pench Tiger Reserve (PTR) in Maharashtra's Nagpur district on October 29, according to the Deccan Herald.

The cub belongs to Tigress F2 from Gothangaon. Pench Tiger Reserve Deputy Director Akshay Gajbhiye said the sighting is a positive milestone for the reserve and a hopeful sign for tiger conservation.

Gajbhiye noted that the presence of the last-litter cub indicates that young tigers are moving through the landscape. He stated it is too early to determine if the tiger is staying in the area or merely passing through.

Officials are tentatively considering a movement route involving Kuhi, Bhandara, Ramtek Paoni, Paoni Buffer, NH-44, and Chorbahuli. However, Gajbhiye said the continuity of this corridor needs scientific validation and further monitoring.

The deputy director said the priority is to maintain a secure habitat so the young tiger can find its own territory and help stabilise the Pench tiger population.

The development highlights forest department efforts in the Chorbahuli wildlife range, including patrolling, habitat improvement, and water conservation to make the forest more suitable for wildlife.
