Delhi: Harsh Malhotra launches road safety pilot project for schools
The 'Safe Walk to School Zone' initiative aims to improve safety for schoolchildren at 28 schools in East Delhi.
Delhi BJP President Harsh Malhotra launched the 'Safe Walk to School Zone' pilot project on Monday at Somerville School in Vasundhara Enclave. BJP MLA Arvinder Singh Lovely was also present at the programme, according to The Hawk.
The road safety initiative, which is a CSR initiative, includes measures outside 28 schools in East Delhi. These measures consist of constructing prominent zebra crossings, speed breakers, railings for children, designated school bus stop areas, signboards, speed limits, and upcoming zebra crossings.
Malhotra told reporters that road safety is a major concern for society at large and not just for the Ministry of Road Transport. He stated that work on the initiative will begin as soon as the GRAP restrictions are lifted.
The pilot project aims to be successful before attempts are made to implement it outside all 270 schools in East Delhi, Malhotra said.
In July, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu addressed the National Summit on Safe Schools Leadership 2026, calling for a comprehensive approach to school safety. Sandhu noted that safety now encompasses physical infrastructure, fire preparedness, cyber security, mental well-being, and transportation safety.
