ASI suspended for planting heroin at Shiv Sena leader's house
A Special Investigation Team has been formed after video footage showed an officer placing contraband at the residence of Mahant Kashmir Giri.
An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) posted with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) staff has been suspended after spy cameras caught him framing a local leader, according to the Hindustan Times.
Khanna senior superintendent of police (SSP) Darpan Ahluwalia ordered the suspension of ASI Sukhdev Singh and initiated a departmental inquiry after video evidence showed that heroin seized from Shiv Sena (Punjab) leader Mahant Kashmir Giri was planted.
The incident began with the arrest of Gurjant Singh, alias Janta, the driver for Giri, who was caught with 7.5 grams of heroin. During interrogation, Giri's name was mentioned, which led to the conspiracy.
On Saturday afternoon, ASI Sukhdev Singh entered Giri's residence near Khatikan Chowk in plain clothes. A hidden camera captured him placing an object under a mattress before a police team arrived to conduct a raid.
The officers, including Sadar station house officer Vijaypal Singh and City-2 station house officer Tarwinder Kumar Bedi, claimed to find 30 grams of heroin under the mattress and arrested Giri.
Following the review of the footage on Saturday evening, SSP Ahluwalia ordered Giri's discharge from the case. On Sunday, an SIT led by an SP-rank officer was formed to investigate the role of all involved personnel.
