West Bengal deploys 12 IAS officers to speed up CAA processing

The officers will work in North 24 Parganas and Nadia to meet a December 31 deadline for 2.5 lakh applicants.

The West Bengal government has assigned 12 IAS probationers to North 24 Parganas and Nadia to accelerate citizenship processing under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). According to reports by Urban Acres and The Times of India, the personnel and administrative reforms department issued an order for the two-month deployment.

The move follows an announcement by Suvendu Adhikari at Thakurnagar on Sunday, where he set a December 31 deadline to grant citizenship to 2.5 lakh Matua and refugee applicants. Adhikari stated that approximately 25,000 applicants in the state have received citizenship under the CAA so far.

In North 24 Parganas, the assigned officers are Romil Dwivedi, Mudita Bansal, Ravula Jayasimha Reddy, Tejaswa, Swami Sunil Ramling, and Rajat Yadav. The Nadia district will have Ritika Rath, Chougule Aditi Sanjay, Abhishek Chowdhury, Meghna Chakraborty, Saksham Bhatia, and Himanshu Bhaskar.

The probationers are tasked with assisting district administrations through document verification and supporting the hearing process. This assignment aims to increase administrative capacity for the existing system rather than establishing a new one.

Adhikari also mentioned that individuals who qualify for Scheduled Caste status will be issued SC certificates once they receive citizenship under the CAA. The administration must complete the hearings and citizenship grants for the targeted applicants by the end of the year.
