Karnataka lawyers to protest for safety on November 3
The Bengaluru Advocates’ Association has called for a statewide strike following recent attacks and killings involving legal professionals.
Lawyers across Karnataka will abstain from court proceedings on November 3 to demand better legal protection for the profession, according to a report by Urban Acres.
The Bengaluru Advocates’ Association decided on the statewide protest during a general body meeting held on October 29.
The association's leadership, including president Vivek Subbareddy, general secretary H.V. Praveen Gowda, vice-president C.S. Girish Kumar, and treasurer Shweta Ravishankar, stated that lawyers' organisations across the state will support the action.
The protest follows several incidents, including the deaths of Whitefield advocate Manjunath Sriram and another advocate in Annapoorneshwari Nagar, as well as an attempt on the life of advocate Venkataramana Sannakki in Gauribidanur.
The association said these events have caused serious anxiety regarding the security of advocates. They are demanding adequate security and the strengthening of the existing Advocates Safety Act to ensure lawyers can work without threats or pressure.
The planned strike is expected to affect the normal functioning of courts on November 3.
