Bengaluru: Senior citizen loses ₹61,000 after mobile phone theft on bus

A 78-year-old man reported that unauthorised UPI transactions occurred after his phone was stolen during a BMTC bus journey.

A 78-year-old man lost ₹61,000 from his bank account following the alleged theft of his mobile phone on a BMTC bus in Electronic City on October 27, according to The Hindu.

The complainant, M. Ramappa, a resident of G.K. Layout, Parappana Agrahara, was travelling to Indira Gandhi Hospital in Siddapura with his granddaughter when the incident occurred.

Ramappa stated that he boarded a bus heading towards Majestic at the Hosa Road bus stop around 9.30 a.m. and soon realised his phone, kept in his shirt pocket, was missing.

After checking his account at a bank branch in Naganathapura, he discovered that ₹50,000 had been withdrawn via a UPI transaction, followed by another withdrawal of ₹11,000 on the same day.

His daughter, Malashree, advised him to contact the cybercrime helpline 1930 after he informed her about the unauthorised transfers.

Ramappa has approached the Electronic City police to lodge a complaint and seek action against those who allegedly stole the device and the money.
