Infant dies in United States after balloon piece gets stuck in throat
The 11-month-old boy passed away in Kenosha, Wisconsin, following an accident during a family Halloween gathering.
An 11-month-old boy, Don’Vyaire Avita-Mays, died in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on October 24 after a piece of an animal-shaped balloon became lodged in his oesophagus, according to Kalinga TV.
The child was attending a family Halloween trunk-or-treat event with his mother, Kisha Avita-Wilson, and two older sisters when the accident occurred.
Avita-Wilson said the family was attempting to keep balloons away from the infant when one came loose, and the baby bit it, causing a tied portion to enter his oesophagus.
The mother removed the child from his car seat and performed CPR while another person also tried to assist, but emergency responders were unable to save him.
The incident occurred two days before the child's first birthday, which was scheduled for October 26.
Avita-Wilson, who is approximately 30 weeks pregnant, was hospitalised with early contractions following the event, according to a fundraising appeal shared by the child's aunt.
