R Madhavan calls outdated relationship advice about in-laws wrong

The actor shared his experience with his in-laws ahead of the release of his film Aap Jaisa Koi.

Actor R Madhavan has criticised the idea that in-laws and their children-in-law should not be close friends, according to The Indian Express.

Speaking to The Quint, Madhavan said he has had wonderful in-laws and described the advice that mother-in-laws are tyrants as overrated and wrong.

Clinical psychologist Dr Rimpa Sarkar said that such advice can be harmful when accepted as a universal truth in a culture where marriage involves two families.

Dr Sarkar noted that approaching relationships with preconditioned mistrust can lead to strained communication and places a partner in a difficult emotional position.

Neha Cadabam, senior psychologist and executive director at Cadabams Hospitals, said families can ease transitions by encouraging open discussions about expectations.

Cadabam added that involving new family members in decision-making and respecting their individuality can help build a sense of belonging.
