Four workers die after inhaling toxic gas in Ujjain hotel chamber

The victims collapsed in a food waste chamber at Shri Ganga Hotel on Dewas Road on Saturday night.

Four workers died after inhaling toxic gas while entering a chamber for leftover food and residual waste at a hotel in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, on Saturday night, according to reports by Hindustan Times and ANI.

Ujjain Superintendent of Police (SP) Pradeep Sharma said the incident occurred at Shri Ganga Hotel on Dewas Road. He stated that staff members and private individuals entered the chamber, where a gas leak likely made the surface slippery and caused them to collapse.

District Collector Raushan Kumar Singh told ANI that two individuals initially entered the food waste tank for cleaning, and two more people entered in an attempt to rescue them. This resulted in a total of four deaths.

Madhav Nagar police station in-charge Gajendra Pachoriya said a cutting machine was used to open the metal chamber door. After a 90-minute rescue operation, the four men were pulled out, but none survived despite police personnel administering CPR.

A fifth cleaner, Hemraj, entered the chamber to help but exited after experiencing dizziness and breathing difficulties. Two other individuals who entered to assist also fell ill and were admitted to the hospital.

A police sub-inspector sustained injuries during the rescue operation. The families of the deceased have sought strict action against the hotel owner, and the bodies have been sent for autopsy.
