Punjab Cabinet approves district-level cadre for Patwaris and Kanungos

The decision aims to resolve administrative anomalies and improve the functioning of the Revenue Department, according to The Tribune.

The Punjab Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, approved amendments to the service rules for Revenue Patwaris and Kanungos on Saturday. The move restores the district-level cadre for these roles, according to The Tribune.

The Chief Minister’s Office stated that the decision aims to overcome administrative anomalies and deadlocks. Previously, an amendment in March 2024 changed the appointing authority from the District Collector to the Director of Land Records, Punjab, leading to legal challenges and seniority complications.

Under the new rules, the District Collector will serve as the appointing authority for Patwaris and Kanungos at the district level. The respective District Collectors will also maintain their seniority lists.

The Cabinet also approved the transfer of 217 Kanals and 14 Marlas of government land in Sangrur's Lehragaga tehsil to the Punjab Mandi Board. The land at Village Khandebad will be used to establish a new grain market at a total consideration of Rs 4.08 crore.

Further decisions included the approval of three labour-related rules: the Code on Wages (Punjab) Rules, 2026, the Punjab Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Rules, 2026, and the Punjab Social Security Rules, 2026.

Additionally, the Cabinet approved a wet waste-based Compressed Biogas project for the Mohali cluster. The project will be awarded to HPCL Renewable and Green Energy Limited at Village Samgauli in Dera Bassi.
