Delhi to redevelop Netaji Subhash Marg stretch with heritage theme

The Indraprastha Virasat Punarvikas Nigam plans to transform the 3.3-km road between Delhi Gate and Kashmere Gate.

The Delhi Government plans to redevelop a 3.3-km portion of Netaji Subhash Marg, spanning from Delhi Gate to Kashmere Gate, according to The Tribune. The Indraprastha Virasat Punarvikas Nigam (IVPN) will undertake the project to improve the corridor while maintaining the historical essence of Old Delhi.

The proposal includes the construction of cycle tracks, pedestrian plazas, dedicated bus lanes, and motor vehicle lanes. The plan also features upgraded bus stops, parking areas, and new public toilets on both sides of the road.

The stretch is divided into three sections. The first runs from Kashmere Gate to GPO Chowk with a width of 12 to 24 metres. The second section between GPO Chowk and Brij Mohan Chowk averages 45 metres in width, while the third section from Brij Mohan Chowk to Delhi Gate ranges from 16.8 to 26 metres.

The project intends to integrate 12 landmarks and green spaces, including the Red Fort, Jama Masjid, and Subhash Park. A Heritage Interpretation Park is also proposed near Delhi Gate, which will include a pavilion, a statue, and landscaped areas.

IVPN chairperson and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the redevelopment aims to provide modern urban amenities while protecting the city's historic identity. She stated that modern facilities should enhance the pride and dignity of Delhi's heritage.
