Veiled marble sculpture by Antonio Corradini sells for record $1.925m

The white marble sculpture of a woman set a new world record for the Italian Baroque sculptor at an auction in Vienna.

A marble sculpture of a veiled woman was sold for €1.925 million at an auction in Vienna on 20 October, according to the Times of India.

The sale set a new world record for works by Italian Baroque sculptor Antonio Corradini. The piece was estimated to fetch between €12,000 and €16,000.

The auction house Dorotheum stated that the bidding ultimately ended in favour of a telephone bidder, as none of the people present in the saleroom won the item. The identity of the buyer remains unknown.

The 60-centimetre tall sculpture is carved from white marble and depicts a woman with a veil that looks like soft fabric. Dorotheum now considers the veiled lady definitively attributable to Corradini.

Corradini, who was born in Venice in 1688, served as court sculptor to Emperor Charles VI in Vienna for about a decade. His patrons included King Augustus the Strong and Tsar Peter the Great.
