Chandigarh will become India's first drug-free city, says Amit Shah
Union Home Minister Amit Shah urged the Chandigarh Police to prioritise the fight against drug abuse during the force's 60th Raising Day.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Sunday that Chandigarh would be the first city in India to become drug-free. Speaking at the Chandigarh Police 60th Raising Day event, Shah stated that freeing the younger generation from drugs is necessary to move towards a Viksit Bharat.
Shah presented the President’s Colour to the Chandigarh Police to recognise 60 years of service. He noted that the force, consisting of approximately 6,000 personnel, has worked since 1966 to protect the city and support national security.
The Home Minister highlighted that the force achieved an 85 per cent conviction rate. He said that between August 4, 2024, and Sunday, the police registered 8,206 FIRs and filed online chargesheets in 7,590 cases.
Shah mentioned that the 85 per cent conviction rate carries an average punishment timeline of 140 days. He said this demonstrates that the judicial process can be completed in less than six months.
To improve safety, the Centre will provide 2,152 AI-equipped cameras to Chandigarh. Additionally, 141 new vehicles were added to the police fleet on Sunday to assist with patrolling and rapid response.
Shah also praised the city's traffic management and noted that residents can access services like passport verification without visiting a police station.
