INDIA bloc holds mega rally at Ramlila Maidan against Chief Election Commissioner
Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi alleged irregularities in electoral rolls during the protest attended by an expected 50,000 people.
The INDIA bloc, led by the Congress, held a mega rally at Ramlila Maidan to protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The protest follows a report by The Indian Express regarding alleged irregularities in the SIR of electoral rolls.
Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi addressed the gathering, thanking INDIA bloc leaders and participants. Gandhi alleged 'vote chori', describing it as the theft of the voice of every person and calling it treason.
Gandhi claimed that without Gyanesh Kumar, Narendra Modi would not have become Prime Minister and Amit Shah would not be Home Minister. He stated the Opposition has enough evidence to ensure Kumar does not continue in office.
The Indian Youth Congress said participants would wear white clothes to resemble ghosts, symbolising voters allegedly marked dead or removed from electoral rolls. Senior officers expected a footfall of around 50,000 people.
Security for the event included over 3,000 police officers and 10,000 paramilitary personnel. Officers said they would ensure the crowd does not move towards Jantar Mantar.
The BJP responded by saying the Opposition can declare Rahul Gandhi as their 'mock Prime Minister'. BJP President Nitin Nabin will lead a counter rally in Rohtak, Haryana, on November 1.
