Four workers die after inhaling toxic gas in Ujjain hotel chamber

Four people died after entering a food waste chamber at a hotel in Madhya Pradesh on Saturday night.

Four workers died after inhaling toxic gas while entering a waste chamber at Shri Ganga Hotel on Dewas Road in Ujjain on Saturday night, according to reports by Hindustan Times, ANI and The New Indian Express.

Ujjain Superintendent of Police Pradeep Sharma said staff members and private individuals entered an above-ground chamber used for leftover food and residual waste. A gas leak likely made the surface slippery, causing the workers to collapse.

Madhav Nagar police station in-charge Gajendra Pachoriya said a cutting machine was used to open the metal chamber door. After a 90-minute rescue operation, the four men were pulled out and given CPR, but they could not be revived.

District Collector Raushan Kumar Singh said two individuals initially entered the tank, and two others entered later in an attempt to rescue them. The administration is investigating whether the workers entered the chamber to clean it or fell in accidentally.

Two other people who attempted to help the trapped workers also became unwell and were taken to the hospital for treatment. A police sub-inspector was also injured during the rescue efforts.

The bodies of the deceased have been sent for autopsy. The family of the victims has requested strict action against the hotel owner.
