Cyclonic storm brewing in Bay of Bengal may hit Andhra coast

A depression is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm and make landfall on the Andhra Pradesh coast on November 3.

A depression over the Bay of Bengal is likely to strengthen into a cyclonic storm and reach the Andhra Pradesh coast on the morning of November 3, according to reports by Outlook, India Today and Deccan Herald.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated on Saturday that the system may cross the coast between Nellore and Narsapur. If the system develops into a cyclonic storm, it will be named Murasu.

IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said the storm could bring wind speeds of 80 to 90 kmph with gusts up to 100 kmph, though Deccan Herald reported wind speeds of 100-110 kmph with gusts up to 120 kmph.

The weather system is expected to bring heavy to extremely heavy rainfall to parts of Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema and Odisha. South Odisha is likely to see heavy rain on November 3 and 4.

Fishermen have been advised to stay away from the sea until at least Wednesday afternoon due to dangerous sea conditions. The Odisha government has begun preparations to evacuate residents from areas vulnerable to landslides in southern districts.

Manorama Mohanty, director of the meteorological centre in Bhubaneswar, said the department is monitoring the progress of the system.
