The Greater Chennai Corporation will develop these recreational spaces under the first phase of the Chief Minister’s Integrated Urban Development Mission.
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) will develop 36 new parks and 11 playgrounds in Chennai during the first phase of the Chief Minister’s Integrated Urban Development Mission (CMIUDM) for 2026–2031, according to The Hindu.
The parks are expected to cost ₹34.45 crore, while the 11 playgrounds will cost ₹9.52 crore. These projects aim to expand the city's green cover and provide better access to recreational areas.
GCC Commissioner G.S. Sameeran said that the corporation is presently inviting tenders for the parks and playgrounds. Construction is set to start once the tendering process concludes.
The proposed parks will be located across nine zones, including Alandur, Manali, Tondiarpet, Ambattur, Anna Nagar, Teynampet, Kodambakkam, Perungudi, and Sholinganallur. Specific sites include the airport entrance in Alandur and Peters Road in Teynampet.
The 11 playgrounds are planned for the Madhavaram, Tondiarpet, Kodambakkam, and Sholinganallur zones. Identified locations include Amirthammal Nagar in Madhavaram and R.V. Nagar in Kodambakkam.
The CMIUDM is a state-wide five-year mission with a total outlay of ₹1.5 lakh crore. This mission includes ₹2,000 crore dedicated to urban greening, open-space development, and recreation throughout Tamil Nadu.
