Bihar orders formal attire for teachers and bans campus DJs

Education Minister Mithlesh Tiwary said staff must follow a dress code to maintain discipline in educational institutes.

Bihar Education Minister Mithlesh Tiwary said on Saturday that the state's education department has instructed all educational institutions to mandate formal clothing for teachers and non-teaching staff. According to reports from Hindustan Times, the minister also expressed concern regarding the use of DJs during campus entertainment.

In a letter issued on Friday, Education Department Director (Administration) Vijay Kumar Pandey directed district officers to ensure staff wear formal clothes during office hours and teaching sessions. The department noted that previous instructions regarding dignified conduct were not being widely followed.

The department stated that reports indicate some staff members have been wearing casual clothing, such as T-shirts and jeans, to work. Tiwary told PTI that teachers should act as role models for students through their behaviour and appearance.

The instructions also prohibit DJ performances and disco on school grounds, which the department said can damage the academic environment and the dignity of the profession. Only disciplined programmes like music or dance, held on special occasions per the academic calendar, are allowed.

District education officers have been told to ensure these rules are followed strictly. The department noted that formal attire is required for appearing in the Patna High Court and the Supreme Court of India to uphold the law.
