Gujarat records 21 encounters in two years, says Bhaskar English report

An accused in a drugs case was shot in the foot during a struggle with police in Ahmedabad.

An accused person, Kafil Ahmed, was shot in the foot during a struggle with police in an Ahmedabad Bolero on Monday, October 26, according to Bhaskar English.

Ahmed, who was arrested in a ₹25 crore drugs case, reportedly complained of chest pain and dizziness while being transported to V.S. Hospital by the Ahmedabad Crime Branch.

During the transit near the Riverfront, Ahmed allegedly struggled with PSI Raval to grab the officer's pistol, causing the weapon to fire.

The bullet passed through Ahmed's left foot and into the ground. He was subsequently taken to Civil Hospital.

The incident brings the total number of encounters in Gujarat to 21 over the last 24 months. In 2025, Gujarat Police fired at 10 accused, and 11 have been fired upon so far in 2026, resulting in two deaths.

Crime Branch DCP Ajit Rajian stated that accused persons often try to escape or attack police, and officers have the right to defend themselves after issuing warnings.

Former IPS officer Ramesh Sawani said that police may resort to encounters to win public approval when the department faces a bad name due to work shortcomings.
