US Secretary of State Rubio hosts Quad meeting in Atlanta
Foreign ministers from Australia, India and Japan met to discuss Indo-Pacific progress and a planned leaders' summit.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with the foreign ministers of Australia, India and Japan in Atlanta on Saturday, according to reports from Business Standard and The Hindu. The meeting, which was the third such gathering this year, focused on turning shared priorities into benefits for the Indo-Pacific region.
The ministers discussed building open supply chains, maritime cooperation, critical minerals and next-generation technologies. A statement from the Quad alliance noted that the group held serious concerns about economic coercion and the use of arbitrary export restrictions.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said the meeting focused on boosting bilateral relations. The ministers are preparing for a Quad leaders' summit in Manila, scheduled for November 15-18 during the Association of Southeast Asian Nations conference.
The upcoming summit in the Philippines will be the first for US President Donald Trump. Rubio said he hopes the G20 foreign ministers can prepare for a leaders' summit on December 14-15 at a resort near Miami.
Rubio also hosted a final plenary session with G20 foreign ministers. During the two-day summit, Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand reportedly confronted Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov regarding the invasion of Ukraine during a closed-door session on Friday.
