Jagan alleges sharp rise in commodity prices under TDP rule

YSRCP chief claims essential item costs increased by up to 433 per cent under the current coalition government.

YSRCP chief YS Jagan Mohan Reddy on Saturday alleged that the prices of food and essential goods have increased significantly under the TDP-led government. According to Deccan Chronicle, Jagan claimed these hikes ranged from 8 per cent to 433 per cent over a two-year period.

The former Chief Minister stated that the cost of living has become difficult for citizens. He noted that a 25-kg sack of rice, which was Rs 1,400 under the YSRCP administration, has reached Rs 2,375 under the TDP-BJP-Jana Sena coalition.

Jagan further alleged that palm oil moved from Rs 85 to Rs 165 per litre, while sunflower oil went from Rs 110 to Rs 189 per litre. He also cited increases in the costs of onions, sugar, milk, eggs, tomatoes, and cooking gas cylinders.

The ruling TDP responded by accusing Jagan of spreading lies and misleading the public. The party questioned his figures, stating that during his tenure, cooking oil reached Rs 200 and onions were Rs 170 per kg.

The TDP attributed open market price rises to El Nino conditions. They stated the coalition government is providing subsidised commodities through ration shops and is prepared to bear a monthly burden of Rs 100 crore to manage prices.

The ruling party also noted that they provide free RTC bus travel and Rs 5 meals in canteens. They claimed they have not raised electricity charges in 2.5 years and have cancelled the previous government's garbage tax.
