BJP taunts Congress over INDIA bloc's mock impeachment of CEC

Spokesperson Sambit Patra suggested the opposition keep Rahul Gandhi as a mock Prime Minister for life.

The Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday criticised the INDIA bloc for holding a symbolic public impeachment of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra said the opposition could keep Rahul Gandhi as a "mock Prime Minister for life."

Patra described the programme as a "mockery of the Parliament itself" and claimed the Congress leader lacks the fuel to launch. He also defended the constitutional immunity provided to the CEC, noting that such protections are already enshrined in the Constitution.

BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad accused Gandhi of making a mockery of the people and challenged him to resign. Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah challenged Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav to discuss voter irregularity issues during a special session of Parliament.

The impeachment proceedings, which were held at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge's residence, were presided over by former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar. The opposition is demanding Kumar's resignation over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.

The symbolic protest was postponed to October 31 due to rain and muddy conditions in Delhi. The event was originally scheduled for Friday ahead of an opposition rally at Ramlila Ground.
