Tamil Nadu increases dearness allowance for government employees and teachers

The hike from 60 per cent to 63 per cent will benefit 16 lakh employees, teachers, and pensioners.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay announced an increase in dearness allowance (DA) for state government employees and teachers on Saturday, October 31, 2026.

According to The Hindu, the DA will rise from 60 per cent to 63 per cent. The revised rates will apply with effect from July 2026.

The decision follows a similar increase for Central government employees, whose DA was also raised from 60 per cent to 63 per cent starting in July 2026.

A total of 16 lakh government employees, teachers, pensioners, and family pensioners will benefit from the hike. The increase is expected to cost the state government ₹1,858 crore a year.

A State government press release stated that the move will help the beneficiaries celebrate Deepavali happily.
