Child dies from measles in New York for first time in 30 years
The death in Lewis County occurs during an ongoing measles outbreak that prompted a state disaster emergency last month.
A child has died after contracting measles in Lewis County, marking the first death from the disease in New York state in 30 years, according to WION on Monday.
The New York State Department of Health and Lewis County Public Health issued a joint statement expressing sadness over the death associated with the current outbreak.
The health department requested that the family and loved ones of the child be granted privacy during this time.
This development follows a state disaster emergency declared by the New York Mayor a month ago in response to measles outbreaks across New York and nearby states.
While the US stopped domestic measles spread in 2000 due to high vaccination rates, coverage has since fallen below the 95 per cent required to prevent outbreaks.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed three measles-related deaths in the US this year, though state health departments report higher figures.
