Sam Altman explains why top researchers left OpenAI to start ventures

The OpenAI CEO suggested that high stakes lead developers to trust only themselves when building artificial intelligence technology.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently suggested that high stakes regarding artificial intelligence technology lead some people to trust only themselves to build it, according to a Times of India report.

Speaking on Raj Shamani’s podcast, Altman addressed why many researchers and executives, including co-founders, have left OpenAI to launch competing projects.

He specifically referred to former OpenAI co-founders Elon Musk and Ilya Sutskever, former chief technology officer (CTO) Mira Murati, and former vice president of research Dario Amodei.

Altman explained that disagreements over technical approaches and concerns regarding the concentration of power are connected, stating that builders may feel they cannot allow others to hold control.

The CEO was previously removed from his position by the OpenAI board in November 2023. The board stated at the time that Altman was not consistently candid in his communications, which hindered their ability to perform their responsibilities.

Following a review process, Altman was later reinstated as CEO, though several key executives departed the company shortly after his return.
