Punjab Police deport gangster Gurwinder alias Afridi from Ethiopia

The deportation follows a 10-month international manhunt conducted under Operation SHAHID to target organised crime.

Punjab Police have secured the deportation of wanted gangster Gurwinder, also known as Afridi, from Ethiopia, according to Moneycontrol. The operation, named Operation SHAHID, followed a 10-month international manhunt.

Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav announced the development on Sunday, November 8. He stated that the Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) Punjab coordinated with the Overseas Fugitive Tracking and Extradition Cell (OFTEC) of Counter Intelligence, Punjab, and central agencies to achieve the deportation.

Afridi is allegedly a key kingpin of the Doni Bal-Prabh Dassuwal gang. Preliminary investigations suggest he was directing criminal activities from abroad, including extortion-related shootings, targeted killings, and other organised crime in Punjab.

The Punjab government had announced a reward of Rs 5 lakh for information leading to his arrest. The tracking process involved intelligence gathering and surveillance across various countries in Africa, South America, and Asia.

Yadav expressed thanks to the Ministry of External Affairs and other central agencies for their assistance in the international cooperation. He noted that the police remain committed to dismantling criminal networks and ensuring state security.

Further investigations are currently underway to determine the full extent of the accused's alleged criminal involvement and to identify the wider network linked to the gang.
