Eight more arrested in Tripura BSF attack case

The total number of arrests has reached 18 following the assault on personnel and a rifle-snatching incident in Sepahijala district.

Police have arrested eight more people in connection with an attack on Border Security Force (BSF) personnel in Tripura's Sepahijala district, according to The New Indian Express. The total number of arrests in the case has reached 18.

The incident occurred on November 2 near the Ashabari border after a person was detained on suspicion of smuggling. An assistant commandant and two BSF personnel were injured during the attack, which also involved the vandalisation of a BSF vehicle and an attempt to snatch arms.

According to ANI, the latest arrests include the prime accused woman, Hasina Akhtar, her son Rabiul Hossain, and Mahabul Hossain. These arrests follow the earlier apprehension of 10 villagers, including seven men and three women, on November 3.

Tripura Police Inspector General (Law and Order) Ipper Manchak told ANI that police are scrutinising everyone named in the FIR and their accomplices based on evidence. On Thursday, a court sent eight accused to eight days of judicial custody after they were produced by the Kalamchoura Police Station.

Chief Minister Manik Saha held a review meeting on the security situation with officials from the state administration, police, BSF, CRPF, and Assam Rifles. He directed authorities to ensure strict legal action and adopt zero tolerance towards cross-border smuggling.

Public Prosecutor Gautam Gir stated that the court had granted the police custody prayer to help establish the sequence of events. Further investigation into the incident is ongoing.
