Kolkata celebrates Kali Puja and Diwali amid cracker restrictions

The city observes both festivals on Sunday with specific rules for green crackers and extended metro services for commuters.

Kolkata is celebrating Kali Puja and Diwali on Sunday, with festive lights and increased business in sweet shops across areas such as Ballygunge and Salt Lake, according to Telegraph India.

The state government has restricted cracker bursting to a two-hour window between 8pm and 10pm. Only green crackers are permitted during this time, with a maximum sound limit of 125 decibels measured 4 metres from the source.

State home secretary Sanghamitra Ghosh said that, per court orders, crackers can only be burst during the specified timings and not before or after. City police commissioner Ajay Nand specified that a blanket ban on fireworks applies beyond the deadline, regardless of whether they produce light or sound.

Violators may face up to six months of imprisonment, a fine of up to Rs 2,500, or both under the Explosives Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Officers from 91 police stations have been instructed to meet resident welfare associations to ensure compliance.

To manage passenger demand, Kolkata Metro has expanded services on the Blue and Green lines, according to Urban Acres. The Blue Line will operate 152 services, with some first trains starting at 8am, while the Green Line will run 123 services.

The Yellow Line will operate 78 services with unchanged timings, while no services will run on the Purple and Orange lines on Sunday.
