Virat Kohli breaks Sachin Tendulkar's ODI run chase record
The batter surpassed Sachin Tendulkar to become the highest run-scorer in ODI chases during India's win against New Zealand.
Virat Kohli scored 74 runs off 51 balls to help India secure a five-wicket victory against New Zealand in Auckland on Wednesday. According to the Times of India, the win gave India a 1-0 lead in the five-match ODI series.
During the match, Kohli surpassed Sachin Tendulkar to become the highest run-scorer in ODI chases. Tendulkar had scored 8,720 runs in 242 innings while batting second, whereas Kohli has now reached 8,741 runs in 169 innings in such scenarios.
Kohli's performance also saw him equal Ricky Ponting's record for the most runs against New Zealand in ODI cricket. Both players have scored 1,971 runs against the team, though Kohli reached the total in 37 innings compared to Ponting's 50 innings.
Former India head coach Ravi Shastri praised Kohli on Sony Sports, stating that a 70-run innings in those conditions was worth a century. Shastri noted that Kohli's ability to take quick singles relieved pressure on captain Shubman Gill.
Shastri added that when Kohli plays in fourth gear, it is difficult for opponents. He also mentioned that watching Kohli's reaction to getting out would show youngsters the level of work required.
