Government approves changes to Agnipath recruitment scheme

Agniveers not chosen for permanent roles will receive two extra years of engagement and a chance to join the Armed Forces.

The government has approved a significant overhaul of the Agnipath recruitment scheme, according to The Hindu.

On Wednesday, November 4, 2026, the Cabinet approved the changes based on recommendations from the three services.

Under the new rules, Agniveers who do not secure regular service after their first four years will be given an additional two years of engagement.

These individuals will then have the opportunity to join the Armed Forces as regular soldiers.

The decision aims to create a pathway for the eventual absorption of all willing Agniveers, provided they meet merit and prescribed selection criteria.
