Iran war caused Republican midterm defeat, says US VP Vance
Vice-President JD Vance attributed the GOP loss to the conflict while House Democrats vow to prioritise ending the war.
US Vice-President JD Vance said on Wednesday that the war in Iran was the reason the Republican Party lost the 2026 midterm elections, according to reports by The Hindu and The Times of India.
In a post on X, Vance stated that the war was the cause of the defeat and noted that the president had also commented on the matter the previous night.
Vance suggested that any honest discussion regarding the future of the party must begin with the conflict.
The Times of India reported that Vance acknowledged many voters who supported Donald Trump in 2024 moved to the Democrats due to concerns including the war, inflation, America First policies, and US relations with Israel.
House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries has pledged to make ending the Iran war a primary goal for the incoming Democratic majority, which may lead to a confrontation with the Trump administration.
The conflict, which President Trump launched in February, has seen recent US strikes on sites in Iran, including Qeshm Island and the port city of Bandar Lengeh.
