Odisha sanctions Rs 107.7 crore for cyclone and flood-hit families
Affected families in Ganjam and Koraput districts will receive cash assistance and rice following Cyclone Arnab.
The Odisha government on Wednesday sanctioned over Rs 107.70 crore from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) to provide relief to families impacted by Cyclone Arnab and subsequent flooding in Ganjam and Koraput districts, according to The New Indian Express and ThePrint.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced a relief package that includes Rs 2,500 in cash and 50 kg of rice for each affected family. The funds have been handed over to the district collectors of Ganjam and Koraput to ensure they are distributed to eligible households.
Ganjam has been allocated Rs 107.44 crore to support 4,29,782 families. Koraput will receive Rs 26.27 lakh to assist 1,051 families.
The cyclone, which made landfall on the Andhra Pradesh coast on October 28, caused heavy rainfall and flooding. In Ganjam, rivers such as the Rushikulya breached embankments, leading to widespread damage to houses, crops, and livelihoods.
A preliminary assessment in Ganjam indicated that 498 schools were damaged by the floods. All schools and anganwadi centres in the district are scheduled to remain closed until November 7 for cleaning, disinfection, and restoration work.
An eight-member central team has also visited Ganjam and Gajapati districts to assess the damage caused by the cyclone.
