Two officers arrested for bribery in Himachal Pradesh and Odisha

Vigilance teams apprehended a Range Officer in Sirmaur and a sub-inspector in Sambalpur for allegedly accepting bribes.

A Range Officer (RO) was arrested in Paonta Sahib on Tuesday for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000, according to The Tribune.

The accused, identified as Sumant, was posted at the Bhagani Forest Range of the Paonta Sahib Forest Division in Sirmaur district. He allegedly demanded the money to avoid the seizure of two tractors involved in extracting sand from the Yamuna.

A vigilance team led by DSP (Vigilance) Sirmaur Ramakant Thakur and Inspector Manoj Kumar caught Sumant red-handed. The arrest followed a complaint from Ikram, a labourer, who alleged that the officer threatened his brother-in-law, Zulfan.

In a separate incident in Odisha, a sub-inspector was apprehended after allegedly jumping into a pond to evade a Vigilance team, as reported by ThePrint.

Sujit Kumar Mahanta, posted at Mahulpali police station in Sambalpur district, allegedly accepted Rs 10,000 to settle a case he was investigating. He reportedly fled and jumped into a pond when officers pursued him.

Officials seized Rs 1.55 lakh in cash from Mahanta's rest room during searches of his office and properties. An FIR has been registered against Sumant under the Prevention of Corruption Act, while investigations into Mahanta are also underway.
