West Bengal to revise school syllabus and include Syama Prasad Mookerjee
School Education Minister Deepak Barman announced the removal of the Singur movement chapter and the introduction of new subjects.
The West Bengal government will add content regarding the life and work of Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee to school books while removing the chapter on the Singur anti-land acquisition movement, according to the Hindustan Times.
School Education Minister Deepak Barman said on Wednesday that a committee has completed a revised syllabus. This new curriculum will focus more on the history of the state and its notable figures.
Mookerjee will be mentioned in every textbook with a short introduction. Additionally, the committee recommended deleting the Kanyashree scheme chapter from Class 6 books and dropping the Singur movement chapter from Class 8.
The updated curriculum will include Information and Communication Technology (ICT) as a structured subject for Classes 5 to 8. Third-language textbooks will also be provided for Classes 7 and 8, and the full 'Vande Mataram' will appear at the start of every textbook.
Barman noted that discussions regarding the pass-fail system and the no-detention policy up to Class 9 are ongoing. The government is also looking at rescheduling the 2027 Madhyamik and Higher Secondary exams to prevent conflicts with the Census.
The West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) has suggested moving Class 10 exams to March 2-16. The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) may propose holding fourth-semester exams after March 16. Revised dates will be announced next week.
