Vehicle emission checks cause traffic snarls at Delhi borders

New restrictions on non-BS-VI vehicles registered outside the capital led to congestion in Gurugram and at the Ghazipur border on Monday.

Vehicle emission inspections triggered significant traffic congestion at Delhi borders on Monday, according to the Hindustan Times. The checks target vehicles registered outside the capital that do not meet Bharat Stage-VI (BS-VI) emission standards.

On the Delhi-Jaipur Expressway, slow movement near Samalka resulted in a tailback of nearly five kilometres reaching Moulsari Avenue in Gurugram. At the UP Gate-Ghazipur border, heavy weekday traffic and vehicle inspections caused brief snarls.

At Noida’s Chilla border, random checks created a queue of approximately 1.7km. While enforcement appeared intensified at major entry points from Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, smaller crossings such as New Ashok Nagar and Anand Vihar saw few or no checks.

The restrictions are part of the Delhi government’s winter action plan. They began on November 1 and are scheduled to remain in place until January 31, 2027.

Constable Khem Chand reported that between 8am and 12.30pm at the DND flyway, four vehicles were turned back for failing to meet BS-VI standards, while five motorists received challans for expired PUCCs.

Noida Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Syyed Ali Abbas stated that police are following CAQM guidelines. He added that action against BS-IV vehicles will be taken after the imposition of GRAP Stage 3.
