Police officer killed by truck during liquor interception in Dewas
Sub-Inspector Dilip Puri died on Sunday night after a truck allegedly carrying illegal liquor ran over him on a highway.
A police station in-charge died on the Harda-Nemawar highway late on Sunday night after being crushed by a truck in Madhya Pradesh's Dewas district, according to The Assam Tribune. Khategaon Police Station in-charge Dilip Puri, a 2007-batch Sub-Inspector, died on the spot when the rear wheel of the vehicle ran over him.
The incident occurred during an operation to intercept a truck suspected of transporting illicit liquor from Harda to Gujarat. Dewas Superintendent of Police (SP) Aditya Mishra had formed more than five police teams to track the vehicle following intelligence inputs.
Police stated that the driver had stopped near a roadside hotel to drink water. When Puri reached the spot to apprehend him, a scuffle broke out, and the driver allegedly attempted to flee with the truck. Puri fell and was run over by the vehicle.
The truck, which was carrying more than 1,800 litres of illegal liquor, has been seized. Police have detained the driver, identified as Gajendra, also known as Akku Rawat, along with transporter Karam Singh and Rahul Jaiswal of Harda for interrogation, according to Deccan Chronicle.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has ordered the Special Director General of Police of the Economic Offence Wing (EOW), Upendra Kumar Jain, to probe the incident. Minister Visvas Sarang alleged a liquor mafia was involved, while Congress spokesman Mukesh Nayak denied the claims and criticised the state government's handling of illegal trade.
