Russia strikes aid centre and shelter in southern Ukraine killing 26

The attacks in the Zaporizhzhia region occurred as a local ceasefire in the neighbouring Kherson region expired.

Russian strikes on a humanitarian aid distribution centre and a nearby shelter in the village of Komyshuvakha killed at least 26 people on Monday, according to The Pioneer and The Hindu.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the initial strike hit a school building used for aid distribution before a second strike targeted a neighbouring shelter.

Acting Zaporizhzhia regional Governor Mykhailo Semikin stated that the deceased included four police officers and two rescue workers, identified as 44-year-olds Denys Konovalenko and Oleksy Sushchevsky.

The violence in the Zaporizhzhia region followed the end of a U.S.-brokered truce in the adjacent Kherson region, which had allowed for evacuations and aid deliveries.

Zelenskyy remarked that the killings suggest Russia is not interested in de-escalating the conflict and is instead expecting further casualties.

Authorities reported that approximately 20 people remain unaccounted for, while drone attacks in the Kharkiv and Odesa regions injured at least 17 others.
