Ryanair considers temporary wage freeze as fuel costs rise

The airline expects European airfares to increase to help cover a forecast €2bn rise in short-term fuel expenses.

Ryanair is weighing a temporary freeze on staff wages to manage a sharp increase in fuel costs, according to BBC News.

The carrier stated that fuel prices have surged following the US-Israel war with Iran. It expects these costs to stay elevated until at least 2027 unless the conflict reaches a quick conclusion.

The airline's fuel bill is projected to be €2bn (£1.6bn) higher in the short term. While Ryanair expects European airfares to rise to help offset these expenses, it said this might not be sufficient.

Among various measures being considered, the company is looking into temporary pay freezes for its workers. The BBC has reached out to Unite, the union representing Ryanair employees, for comment.
